While these tips can be applied to any Disney destination—be it Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, or Adventures by Disney—they are specifically tailored for Walt Disney World, which requires more detailed planning. Whether you’re a seasoned visitor or a first-timer, we hope these tips help you have the best Walt Disney World vacation possible!
Now, without further ado, here are HAA Disney’s Top 10 Tips for Planning Your Walt Disney World Vacation!
Planning to Go to Walt Disney World
- Go Longer Than You Think!
When planning your Walt Disney World vacation, consider extending your trip beyond what you initially think. If you’re thinking about a four-day visit, aim for eight days, plus travel time. Those extra days allow for breaks between park adventures, giving you time to recharge and truly savor the magic of Disney.
I always plan for at least 10 days, using weekends on both ends to maximize our time. This extra time allows us to visit all the parks, explore Disney Springs, and include off-property activities. We also schedule rest days to relax by the pool or enjoy our resort, ensuring a more magical and stress-free experience.
Shorter trips often leave me wishing for just one or two more days. With a longer stay, I can fully immerse myself in the parks without feeling rushed, allowing me to soak in every magical moment of our Disney adventure.

- Venture Outside of the Walt Disney World Bubble
When planning your Walt Disney World vacation, don’t forget to explore beyond the Disney bubble! Attractions like I-Drive and Universal Orlando add a whole new dimension to your trip. From thrilling rides at Universal to lively entertainment at CityWalk and unique dining experiences, there’s so much to discover outside the parks.
I always make it a point to venture off-site during our trips. I love hitting the outlet malls for amazing deals, exploring local attractions, and dining at various restaurants. Grocery shopping is also a must for us! Stocking up on snacks and ingredients adds a homey touch to our stay and keeps us energized for all the magic ahead.
We sometimes take breaks from the parks to enjoy the beautiful beaches along the Gulf Coast, especially in St. Petersburg and Clearwater. These excursions enhance our overall experience and create even more magical memories, proving that there’s so much to do beyond Walt Disney World!
- Purchase Trip Specific Items Ahead of Time
When planning your Walt Disney World trip, gathering trip-specific items ahead of time is crucial to avoid feeling overwhelmed. For Canadians, shopping at shopDisney.com can be tricky due to high shipping costs and duties. Instead, I recommend checking local stores or browsing Amazon for themed apparel and essentials. This way, you can find everything you need without the hassle of U.S. shipping.
Before heading to Disney, I always stock up on essentials to ensure a smooth trip. I pack snacks for the journey—who doesn’t love munching on treats while traveling? I also grab summer clothing to prepare for the Florida sun. Being prepared saves time and helps me avoid last-minute stress, allowing me to focus on enjoying the magic of my Disney adventure right from the start!
- Purchase Gift Cards Ahead of Time.
When planning your Walt Disney World trip, buying gift cards ahead of time is a smart move! Purchase Disney gift cards for use in the parks, along with cards for Starbucks, Amazon, and gas stations to help manage your overall budget. If you’re in the U.S., take advantage of deals at Target with your Red Debit/Credit card for a 5% discount, or check Sam’s Club and Costco for Disney gift card promotions. Canadians should plan ahead since these deals aren’t applicable to us. Having them ready adds to the excitement of our adventures!
- Sign up for memberships like Hilton or Delta to collect points for future trips—free hotel rooms and upgrades.
When planning your Walt Disney World trip, consider signing up for free memberships with hotels and airlines. These programs let you collect points for free hotel stays, upgrades, and exclusive perks on future trips. Taking a few minutes to enroll can enhance your travel experience and save you money down the line! By exclusively using these memberships, we’ve enjoyed free hotel stays and even redeemed points for airline tickets to Walt Disney World and other destinations. It’s a great way to add value to our travels!
- Do your car checks before the trip.
Before heading to Walt Disney World, make sure to check your vehicle thoroughly, regardless of whether you’re driving or parking at the airport. Inspect your oil, tire pressure, brakes, and windshield wipers, and ensure your fuel tank is full. If you’re traveling long distances, consider getting your car serviced to avoid surprises on the road. A well-maintained vehicle enhances safety and lets you focus on the excitement ahead!
When we drove to Walt Disney World, we ensured our car was in good shape, but unexpected issues still arose during our trip. Thankfully, we were prepared with snacks and games to keep everyone entertained during delays. This experience reminded us that while not everything can be predicted, a little planning goes a long way.
Even if your car is parked while you jet off to Disney, check it beforehand to avoid returning to unexpected issues. You want the only surprise upon your return to be the magic of Disney!

- Budget For and Purchase Lightening Lane Multipass and Single Pass
When planning your Walt Disney World trip, budget for Lightning Lane access, including Multipass and Single Pass options, especially for popular parks like Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. These passes let you skip long lines, maximizing your park time and allowing you to prioritize must-do attractions.
I always purchase the Lightning Lane Multipass and Single Passes for Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, while I opt for a Single Pass for Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom. This strategy minimizes wait times, letting me soak in more of the Disney magic. Although I wish FastPass was still available, the benefits of these passes make them worth the investment!
- Familiarize yourself with the My Disney Experience App before your trip.
Before your Walt Disney World trip, get comfortable with the My Disney Experience app, as you’ll rely on it throughout your visit. Practice making same-day dining reservations and booking Lightning Lanes from home to familiarize yourself with the process. Explore features like mobile check-out and virtual queues to navigate the parks confidently.
I always practice using the app before my trips, especially with any updates or changes. This preparation ensures I can enjoy the magic without stressing over logistics once I’m in the parks!
- Watch and Listen to Various Walt Disney World “YouTubers” and Podcasts
Enhance your Walt Disney World vacation planning by visualizing what you want to see and do! I recommend watching videos from trusted creators like Disney Food Blog, Paging Mr. Morrow, DisneyVille: A Disney World Podcast, AllEars, Mammoth Club and so many more. Their park overviews, attraction reviews, and tips give you a great feel for each park’s layout and offerings.
Even though I frequent the parks, I still enjoy these videos to stay updated and excited before our trips. They help me navigate more efficiently, ensuring my family and I maximize our magical adventure. Familiarizing myself with the parks and dining options in advance truly enhances our experience and prepares us for all the magic ahead!
- Make Your Dining Reservations and Lightening Lanes To Secure your Spots.
When planning your Walt Disney World vacation, it’s essential to make dining reservations 60 days in advance and secure Lightning Lanes 3 to 7 days before your trip. This proactive approach ensures you snag spots at must-try restaurants and enjoy popular attractions with minimal wait times.
I start checking dining reservations 60 days out to secure our favorites and monitor Lightning Lane prices about three weeks before we leave using the My Disney Experience app. This way, we can maximize our experience and enjoy both great meals and thrilling rides!
As we wrap up our HAA Disney: Top 10 Tips for Planning for a Walt Disney World Vacation, it’s evident that thoughtful planning plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and memorable trip.
