Do you really need a rental car at Disney World? Or can you skip the car and rely on Disney transportation instead?

🚝 The Disney Monorail

Few things are more iconic than the Walt Disney World Monorail.

And honestly?

The Monorail feels like an attraction in itself.

The Monorail system provides transportation around the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT areas, including connections involving the Transportation and Ticket Center and several resorts.

For guests staying at a Monorail-accessible resort, the convenience can be a major advantage.

Why We Love It

You’re not sitting in Orlando traffic.

You get views of the resort.

You don’t have to find or pay for parking.

And there’s just something about stepping onto the Monorail that immediately makes you feel like you’re at Walt Disney World.

The Catch

The Monorail doesn’t take you everywhere.

It can also become busy around park opening and closing, and it isn’t always the fastest option depending on your destination.

If you’re considering a Disney resort specifically because of transportation, Monorail access is absolutely worth considering.

🚠 Disney Skyliner

The Disney Skyliner completely changed the way many guests think about getting around Walt Disney World.

The gondola system connects EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with several Disney Resort hotels, including Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Riviera Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.

And this is another perfect example of Disney turning transportation into part of the experience.

You’re not just getting from one place to another.

The boats are probably one of the most underrated Disney transportation options.

Depending on the route, Walt Disney World offers different water transportation options connecting resorts, parks and other areas.

And here’s what we love about them:

Sometimes the slower option is the better option.

After spending ten hours walking around a theme park, sitting on a boat, feeling the breeze and watching the resort pass by can be a surprisingly relaxing part of the day.

Not every transportation option needs to be about getting there as quickly as possible.

Sometimes it’s about how you feel when you get there.

🚶 Don’t Forget Walking

One transportation option that’s easy to overlook?

Your own two feet.

Depending on your resort and destination, walking can be one of the easiest ways to get around Walt Disney World.

For some resort locations, being within walking distance of a theme park can be a major advantage.

There’s no waiting.

No traffic.

No crowds.

You simply walk out the door and go.

So when comparing Disney Resort hotels, don’t just ask:

“What is the room like?”

Ask:

“How am I getting to the parks?”

🚗 So… Do You Need a Rental Car at Disney World?

This is the big question.

For a Disney-focused vacation, our answer is:

Probably not.

If your trip looks something like:

Disney Resort → Disney Parks → Disney Resort

you can absolutely build your vacation around Disney transportation.

Eating at lots of restaurants outside Walt Disney World
Taking day trips
Combining Disney with a broader Orlando vacation

This is where your overall itinerary becomes important.

If Disney is the main event, you may not need a car.

If Disney is one part of a larger Florida vacation, having your own vehicle can provide significantly more flexibility.

And before you even start worrying about Florida tolls, ask yourself:

Disney transportation isn’t perfect.

It isn’t always the fastest option.

It isn’t always the most convenient option.

And sometimes you’re absolutely going to find yourself standing on a crowded bus wondering why you didn’t rent a car.

But overall?

We think it’s worth it.

🎙️ FINAL VERDICT: Is Disney Transportation Worth Skipping the Rental Car?

For a Disney-focused Walt Disney World vacation, we’d absolutely consider skipping the rental car.

Between the buses, Monorail, Skyliner, boats and walking routes, there are plenty of ways to get around without worrying about Orlando traffic, parking or tolls.

And there’s another reason we like Disney transportation:

It feels like part of the vacation.

The Monorail.

The Skyliner.

A boat ride after a long day.

Even watching a Disney bus pull up when you’re exhausted and ready to go back to your resort.
