For many guests, staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel is an important part of the trip. The theming, atmosphere, proximity and convenience of being within the Disney Resort area are difficult to replicate.

We love that experience, too.

However, staying off Disney property can offer a completely different set of advantages. For families, larger groups, multi-generational travellers and guests planning longer Orlando vacations, an off-property resort, villa or vacation home may provide additional space, flexibility and amenities that are difficult to achieve with a traditional hotel room.

One of our favorite examples is Reunion Resort & Golf Club in Kissimmee, where guests can combine spacious villa accommodations with extensive resort amenities while remaining within convenient reach of Walt Disney World.

So, if you’re deciding whether to stay on or off Disney property, here are 10 reasons an off-property stay may be worth considering.

For us, that flexibility is one of the primary benefits of staying outside the Disney Resort area.

Orlando is a major vacation destination with considerably more to offer than Walt Disney World.

Staying off property can make it easier to incorporate some of those experiences into your trip.

You might spend several days at Disney, visit Universal Orlando, explore local restaurants, spend an afternoon shopping or simply discover another part of Central Florida.

That doesn’t diminish the Disney portion of the vacation.

Instead, it can give you a more varied Orlando experience.

For us, Disney can still be the focus of a trip without being the only destination we experience.

Privacy is another benefit that becomes particularly important for families and multi-generational groups.

Different members of a family often have different schedules.

We love Walt Disney World.

But we don’t believe every moment of a Disney vacation needs to revolve around the parks.

There is value in having a slower morning.

Having breakfast at your accommodation.

Spending an afternoon at the pool.

Taking a resort day.

Exploring another part of Orlando.

Returning to your villa after an evening at Disney.

The flexibility to create that balance can make a vacation feel less like a schedule that needs to be completed and more like an experience you can enjoy at your own pace.

You can love Disney and still choose not to stay at Disney.

Those choices aren’t mutually exclusive.

We will always understand the appeal of staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

The Disney atmosphere, theming, transportation and convenience are significant advantages, and for many vacations, they are exactly what makes an on-property stay worthwhile.

But staying off property can provide a different set of benefits.

For the right traveler, it can mean:

More space.

More privacy.

Greater flexibility.

A full kitchen.

Resort amenities.

More options for longer stays.

Greater freedom to explore Orlando.

There are trade-offs.

Transportation requires additional planning, and a rental car may be an important part of the budget. You also give up some of the convenience and immersion that comes with staying inside the Disney Resort area.

But for families and groups who value space and flexibility, those trade-offs can be worthwhile.

A resort such as Reunion Resort demonstrates how an off-property stay can still feel like a destination vacation. Guests can have the space of a villa, access to extensive resort amenities and convenient access to Walt Disney World without making the theme parks the only focus of the trip.

Stay on property if the Disney Resort experience is an important part of what you want from your trip.
